Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson was born in Manhattan, New York City, on October 5th, 1958. He has become one of the best known, living science personalities. Born into a successful, middle-class professional family, Tyson attended public school in the Bronx. He soon became interested in science, and in astronomy in particular. His application to Cornell University ended up on the desk of Carl Sagan, and at the age of 17 Tyson met Sagan for the first time. The meeting had a huge influence on Tyson’s career, leading him to become a science communicator like Sagan. Tyson attended Harvard University, went on to lecture on astronomy, completed a PhD, and conducted research. He now serves as the director of the Hayden Planetarium. Neil deGrasse Tyson has made numerous appearances on TV shows discussing science and social justice issues.
